EU : €8,5 M mobilised by the European Commission to help 5800 dismissed Northvolt workers in Sweden

€8,5 M from the European Globalisation Adjustement Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF) to help 5800 workers dismissed after the bankruptcy of Northvolt in Sweden: this is the proposal announced by the Commission on 30/10/2025.

Northvolt's bankruptcy in March 2025 led to 6500 job losses in the company, its branches and subcontractors, and Sweden applied for EGF support in June 2025. The EGF has been founded in 2014 to help Members States assist their workers who lose their job due to the coronavirus crisis, digitisation, automation, the transition to a low-carbon economy, or other changes.

The EGF-funded measures aim to help these workers quickly rejoin the labour market and match their skills with emerging industries in northern Sweden. In addition, the funding will finance measures such as career counselling and guidance, education and training, including support for dismissed workers to launch their own start-up companies.

The total estimated cost of these measures is €14.2 M, with 60% (€8.5 M) covered by the Commission and 40% (€5.7 M) by the Swedish Public Employment Service. The…
