UAE/Masdar: Launch of a first gigascale round-the-clock project combining solar power and energy storage

A 5, 2GW solar plant combined with a 19 MwH Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), designed to provide 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload renewable energy around the clock at a competitive tariff: these are the innovative features of the first gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project, located in the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development, attented the groundbreaking of this new renewable energy project, on 24/10/2025, in Abu Dhabi (UAE). This first-of-its-kind plant, developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, together with Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), will create more than 10,000 jobs, as well as new manufacturing facilities, while avoiding approximately 5.7 Mt of carbon emissions annually when the facility becomes operational by 2027. It is aimed to be replicated internationally to meet the growing demand for round-the-clock power.
