Fossil fuels: 601 "carbon bombs", +42, 4% in two years (422 in 2003) listed in a survey (NGOs)

601 is the number of "carbon bombs" listed by the French organisations Data for Good, Dingo, Reclaim Finance and Éclaircies and presented in the "CarbonBombs" survey on 27/10/2025.

This is an update of the list first presented by the NGOs on 31/10/2023. The list contained 422 carbon bombs at that time; the number of "carbon bombs" has risen by 42,4% in two years., with 179 new projects. Indeed, The list includes sites that are currently being exploited and extraction projects for which exploitation has not yet begun.

Introduced in 2022 by German researcher Kjell Kühne, the term "carbon bomb" refers to a fossil fuel deposit where the exploitation of the reserves still available will emit at least one gigatonne of CO2eq before they are exhausted.

"This new data shows that the fossil fuel industry and those who finance it are in the process of reducing the Paris Agreement to ashes. For years, their financial interests have taken precedence over preventing irreversible climate collapse", says Lou Welgryn, Director of Data for Good.
