FR: TotalEnergies' Net Zero commitment ads ruled "misleading and illegal" by Paris Judicial Court

The 34^th Chamber of the Paris Judicial Court has found TotalEnergies’ advertising illegal, in a case filed in may 2022 by NGOs Friends of the Earth France, Greenpeace France, and Notre Affaire à Tous, with the support of ClientEarth.

The Court ruled, on 23/10/2025, that "TotalEnergies and TotalEnergies Electricité et Gaz France have engaged in misleading commercial practices by disseminating, via the www.totalenergies.fr website, messages based on claims relating to their 'ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050' and 'to be a major player in the energy transition' that are likely to mislead consumers as to the scope of the Group's environmental commitments."

The Court ordered that within one month, TotalEnergies and TotalEnergies Electricité et Gaz France must cease the unlawful advertising and must display the judgment prominently on the www.totalenergies.fr website for a period of 180 days. A failure to do so would be subject to a fine of €10,000 per day of delay.
