EP/Envi Committee in favour of integration of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement

61 MEPs voted for the integration of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement into EU law, 15 voted against, and 10 abstained during the Envi Committee meeting on the sidelines of the Plenary meeting in Strasbourg, on 21/10/2025. The Parliament's plenary vote is expected to take place on 13/11/2025. Then, negotiations with the Council will take place to integrate the Directive into EU law.

"Today we agreed on a solid basis to translate the BBNJ Agreement into concrete action and rules at the EU level: it is important to show that the EU is serious about its international commitments and responsibilities on conservation of marine biodiversity, as well as the power of multilateralism, collaboration, and science-based governance. Protecting and ensuring the sustainable use of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction will benefit both Europe and our international partners.
