"Europe's independence moment" : key sustainability features of the 2026 work programme of the Commission

Titled "Europe's independence moment", the 2026 work programme of the Commission, released on 21/10/2025 in Brussels by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission, outlines a series of actions to help build a more sovereign and independent Europe, as it is facing rising geopolitical tensions, serious threats to its security and democracy and risks to its economy and industry. "Accelerating climate change" remains high on the agenda, coming right after the previous challenges.

In 2026, the Commission will continue to cut red tape for people, business and administrations. The first overview report on simplification, implementation and enforcement, also adopted today, highlights the progress achieved so far - such as the six omnibus packages adopted in 2025 and other simplification proposals aiming to bring over €8.6 Bn in annual cost savings for business and citizens.
