International Maritime Organisation: postponement of the Net-Zero Framework ratification to October 2026

128 delegations attended the extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organisation's Marine Environment Protection Committee in London, from 14 to 17/10/2025, where the vote on the Net-Zero Framework was planned on 17/10/2025. At the end of the four-day discussions, delegations voted to postpone it to October 2026. This could postpone the entry into force of the NZF to 2030.

"The extraordinary session will be reconvened in 12 months. In the interim, Member States will continue to work towards consensus on the IMO Net Zero Framework", declares the IMO on 17/10/2025.

The NZF plans to impose a global fuel standard and a pricing mechanism with set prices for GHG emissions from ships. The aim is to encourage the shipping industry to reduce emissions and to engage further in the decarbonisation of its activities.
