EC: publication of recommendation 2025 /2043 on organic soils and climate change impacts (OJEU)

News Tank Transitions - Bruxelles - Official texts #415128 - Published on

In order to help Member States submit evidence of the impact of climate change as well as some legacy effects on their organic soils, the European Commission published a recommendation clarifying definitions and thresholds and setting new indices linked to this assessment, on 13/10/2025 in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

According to this Implementation Regulation, other indices as the sole aridity indice can be used by the Member States to monitor the degradation and the reduced sequestration capacity of their organic soils, due to climate change as well as past management practices of their soils.
Only Members States counting more than 85% of organic soils in their managed lands are concerned by this recommendation (Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia and Sweden).
