Monique Barbut has been appointed Minister for the Ecological Transition, Biodiversity and International Negotiations on Climate and Nature, by Sébastien Lecornu, French Prime Minister, on 12/10/2025.
Monique Barbut holds a post-graduate diploma (DEA) in Economics from the University of Paris 1. She held various positions at Agence Française de Développement (AFD) from 1981 to 2003, and was its Executive Director from 2000 to 2003. She was then Director of the Technology Division of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) from 2003 to 2006, before becoming CEO of the NGO Global Environment Facility from 2006 to 2012. She has been Executive Secretary of the UNCCD since 2013, and was President of WWF France from 2021 to 2024.

She will be assisted by two deputy ministers: Catherine Chabaud, a former sailor and Member of European Parliament (Modem) from 2019 to 2024, is in charge of the sea and fisheries; and Mathieu Lefevre, MP (Ensemble pour la République) for the Val-de-Marne department, is in charge of the ecological transition.
