Global Gateway Forum : 'South Africa is becoming a clean energy pioneer' (U. von der Leyen, EC President)

€12Bn mobilised to support the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET) with South Africa”: that is the amount of European investments announced by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in a joint press statement with Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, in Brussels on 09/10/2025. This announcement was made on the margins of the EU-2 days event Global Gateway Forum, which started the same day.

'In March 2025, at our EU-South Africa Summit in Cape Town, we announced a €4.7Bn Global Gateway package with South Africa, mainly to boost biomanufacturing capabilities that are so important and above all, to produce clean energy. Back then, we made a strong call to invest in renewables in and with South Africa. Because the logic is: there is natural resources in abundance, you have the skills, the business case is clear and this transition is a boon of opportunity. I am delighted to announce that our Member States have stepped up. They are bringing a massive contribution to the package', declared Ursula von der Leyen.
