"If all of ACEA's demands were implemented, it would halve the number of electric cars sold in 2035", declares Transport & Environment (T&E), on 08/10/2025. The NGO refers to a position papier of ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) published in the press on 08/10/2025, while the European Commission is working on a legislative proposal revising CO₂ standards for new cars, expected to be published by the end of 2025.

"In total, manufacturers are demanding six changes to the current regulations, such as considering alternative fuels as synthetic fuels or biofuels as 'zero emission'; ACEA also wants to prevent the EU from revising upwards the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) emissions of plug-in hybrids, even though the gap between this standard and actual emissions is growing", the NGO continues.

The previous amendment to the 2019 regulation, dating from April 2023, strengthened the legislatory framework for achieving zero emissions by 2035 for new vehicles. In 2025, the Commission proposed flexibility measures for manufacturers for the years…
