Renewable energies: 4,600 GW of new capacity added by 2030; forecasts revised downwards (IEA)

4,600 GW of new renewable energy capacity will be added worldwide between 2025 and 2030, according to the IEA (International Energy Agency) forecasts detailed in its annual report "Renewables 2025: Analysis and outlook to 2030" published on 09/10/2025.

This is a slight downward revision (-5%) compared with the 2024 edition of the report, mainly due to policy changes in the United States and China. 'The anticipated removal of federal tax incentives and other regulatory reforms have reduced the growth outlook for renewables in the US market by almost 50% compared to the previous forecast. In China, the shift from fixed tariffs to an auction system is affecting the profitability of projects and reducing growth forecasts for this market', says the IEA. Specifically, the agency predicts that 248 GW less renewable capacity will be commissioned between 2025 and 2030.

Global renewable electricity production capacity is expected to increase by a factor of 2.6 by 2030 compared to 2022; however, this remains below the COP28 target of tripling capacity.
