Call for a swift adoption of the Net Zero Framework in the shipping sector (ESPO)

ESPO has asked IMO's member states to formally adopt the NZF during the second extraordinary session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC/ES.2), which will take place in London from 14 to 17/10/2025. The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) expressed their views on the IMO Net-Zero Framework (NZF) on the 02/10/2025.

Among other things, NZF plans to impose a global fuel standard and a pricing mechanism with set prices for GHG emissions from ships. This will impact ports, as they will have to provide the right infrastructure. The NZF's aim is to encourage the shipping industry to reduce emissions.

ESPO is demanding its swift adoption, viewing it as a vital step towards decarbonising international shipping. Furthermore, ESPO expressed their need for a clear, harmonised framework for the sustainable transition of shipping from the European Commission. The latter has already introduced measures such as FuelEU Maritime, which has promoted the use of renewable, low-carbon fuels and clean energy technologies for ships since 01/01/2025.
