"The fossil fuel industry has always been the key player in Brussels. We have seen a shift from coal to gas. The coal industry has been sacrificed witthat gas is clean and the ideal partner for renewables. And the renewables lobby has stopped calling for 100% renewables in Europe's energy mix by 2030 and has started promoting gas too," Pascoe Sabido, researcher and campaigner for Corporate Europe, told News Tank on 23/09/2025.

Corporate Europe is a Brussels-based NGO that monitors and seeks to reduce the influence of lobbies at European level. In particular, it investigates corporate lobbying, particularly by the oil and gas industry, and how they try to influence decision-making and law-making in Brussels.

" The strongest energy lobby in Brussels is Germany. But France and its nuclear industry are not to be outdone, nor are Spain and Italy on gas issues", adds Pascoe Sabido.

The NGO is also campaigning for the fossil fuel industry to be excluded from UN climate negotiations.
