Australia: 62%-70% GHG reduction target by 2035 compared with 2005 levels

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 62-70% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels: this is the reduction target announced by Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, on 18/09/2025. The decision was taken on the proposal of the Climate Change Authority, the country's government agency, as part of Australia's nationally determined contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement.

To reach this target, the Australian government estimates that A$ 400 to 500 B of investments are required. "This funding will be driven by the private sector. The government's role is to facilitate this investment", says Anthony Albanese. In addition, the Australian government announced an investment of A$8.3 B(€4.6 B) on 17/09/2025, bringing the country's total investment in reducing greenhouse gases to A$75 B (€42 B).

In 2023, oil accounted for 35.7% of Australia's energy mix, natural gas 27.6% and coal 26.6%. In 2000, coal accounted for 80% of Australia's electricity mix.
