Data: National expenditures and investments in environmental protection from European countries in 2022

In 2022, EU investments in environmental protection represented 0.4% of its GDP (gross domestic product). Slovenia was the Member State with the highest share of investments, with 0.8% of its GDP, while Ireland had the lowest share with 0.1% of its GDP. France devoted 0.6% of its GDP to environmental protection, a relatively stable share since 2014 (between 0.5 and 0.6% of GDP annually).

"Investments represent the share of the total economy, including general governments and corporations, to provide environmental protection services. Investments undertaken by corporations to manage their own environmental pressures are included", explains Eurostat, the publisher of the data.

The EU national expenditure on environmental protection as a percentage of GDP was 1.9% in 2022. It has lost 0.3 percentage points since 2020. Belgium has the highest share of national expenditure in 2022, with 3.4% of its GDP. Ireland has the lowest share with 0.6% of its GDP.
