Low-carbon hydrogen: "The potential for production between now and 2030 has diminished" (IEA)

"The potential for low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030, based on announced projects, has decreased", according to the World Hydrogen Assessment 2025 published by the IEA on 12/09/2025. "The production that could be achieved by 2030 now stands at 37 Mtpy (49 Mtpy by 2030 was envisaged when the World Hydrogen Assessment 2024 was published).

The IEA monitors global hydrogen production and demand, public policy, infrastructure, trade, investment and innovation. The first edition of this report was published in 2021.

According to the 2025 edition, global hydrogen demand reached 100 Mt in 2024 (+2% compared to 2023). Low-carbon hydrogen production increased by 10% in 2024 and should reach 1 Mt in 2025, accounting for less than 1% of world production.

Regarding electrolysis, worldwide installed water electrolysis capacity reached 2 GW in 2024. China accounts for 65% of the world's installed capacity and of the capacity that has reached FID. China is also home to 60% of the world's electrolyser manufacturing capacity.
