State of the Union speech: "A deregulatory programme that undermines the Green Deal" (EEB)

"Behind the talk of "simplification" in the name of "competitiveness" lies a programme of deregulation: an avalanche of Omnibus packages aimed at reducing the rules applicable to certain businesses. This push for deregulation is not accompanied by any evidence of benefits for society or the economy. It is a programme of deregulation that goes to the very heart of the Green Deal", says the European Environmental Bureau, following the State of the Union speech by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on 10/09/2025.

In particular, the President proposes:
• a new "grids" package aimed at producing more local renewable energies, with nuclear power as a base load, modernising and investing in infrastructure and interconnections, and speeding up the granting of authorisations.
• a new Energy Highways initiative that will bring governments and utilities together to solve outstanding problems and remove eight critical bottlenecks in energy infrastructure.
• a Battery Booster package, which aims to put €1.8bn on the capital market to boost production in Europe.
