Batteries: "Europe risks losing its strategic autonomy" (Powerco, Verkor and ACC)

"Without immediate, targeted support for local battery production, Europe risks losing its strategic autonomy in a key 21st century technology", wrote PowerCo, Verkor and ACC, battery manufacturers in France, Germany and Spain, in a joint statement on 04/09/2025.

" While the United States and China offer substantial subsidies for local production, European manufacturers, still in the development phase, risk being left behind before they reach maturity"

The three battery manufacturers, like the European Battery Alliance, are calling for support of €1 billion to ramp up the industry and €1.8 billion for the first three years of production. "This is not financial aid, but a springboard to performance, enabling 90 GWh of batteries to be produced in the EU by 2027. The time has come for direct support for production, indexed to production and degressive over time", say PowerCo, Verkor and ACC.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will bring together stakeholders from the European automotive industry on 12/09/2025 to discuss the future of the sector.
