EP/2040 climate targets: majority of MEPs in favour of 90% target (ENVI Committee)

Ondřej Knotek (PfE, Patriots for Europe), rapporteur of the European Parliament on the European Commission's 2040 climate target proposal, presented his report in the ENVI Committee in Brussels on 04/09/2025.

His group decided to reject the Commission's proposal on these binding climate targets, along with two other parliamentary groups, the ECR (European Conservatives and Reformists) and the ESN (Europe of Nations and Freedom).

"Our rejection of the Commission's proposal is not an act of activism, nor does it lack constructiveness. It is a responsible and justified decision on the direction to take in Europe these days", says the rapporteur.

Other parliamentary groups of the ENVI Committee (The Left, The Greens, S&D, Renew and the PPE) all agreed to work on the Commission proposal, along with MEPs from other Committees, including ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy). Its rapporteur for the 2040 climate targets, Niels Fuglsang (S&D), outlined in the ENVI meeting that most political groups agreed on a target of at least 90%.
