France: €448 M spent on the impact reduction of the food industry in 2022 (Insee/Agreste)

"Establishments with 20 or more employees in the agri-food industries (excluding tobacco and commercial craft industries) spent €448 M in 2022 to reduce the impact of their activity on the environment", notes Agreste (French statistical governmental agency for agriculture) in an analysis published on 23/07/2025, following the publication by INSEE of its survey of spending on environmental protection in industry (Antipol).

This amount represents 22% of all anti-pollution expenditure incurred by the manufacturing industry, more than the share they occupy in the manufacturing industry (16%). It is primarily driven by their investments in renewable energies and energy savings (€202 M)

The annual Antipol survey fulfills the European regulation requirements (implementing regulation EC 2020/1197 of 30/07/2020 on the framework regulation European business statistics EC2019/2152) concerning structural business statistics. It provides information on environmental protection expenditure by activity, size of establishment and environmental field (water, waste, air and climate protection, etc.).
