France: €8.3 Bn aids for biodiversity-adverse agriculture to be reviewed in priority (IGEDD/IGF)

€8.3 Bn of resources or measures devoted to the French agriculture have been identified as harmful to biodiversity and should be reviewed as a priority, according to the IGEDD (General Inspection for the Environment and Sustainable Development) and IGF (General Inspection of Finance) report, published on 29/07/2025.

"The IGF and IGEDD consider that European funds, which are essential to the economic sustainability of agricultural activity, are not sufficiently mobilised to halt the ongoing degradation of biodiversity, by still allowing the use of damaging practices, which is enough to qualify them as 'subsidies to be examined as a priority'", state the IGEDD and IGF inspectors.

Of all the sectors reviewed, including agriculture, forestry, maritime affairs, development and energy, more than 250 schemes need to be looked at in greater depth regarding their impact on biodiversity, amounting to €37 B in total, of which €20 B should be reviewed as a priority, according to the IGEDD and IGF.
