Plastic pollution treaty: failure of the negotiations in Geneva, back to the 2024 point for next meetings

The 183 countries' delegations failed to reach a consensus on a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution during the 10-days negotiations in Geneva, from 05 to 15/08/2025. A new round of discussions is expected to be held, without a date nor a place yet. The summit in Geneva was the sixth round of discussions towards a global plastic treaty since 2022.

"We came here with the goal of reaching an agreement. That did not happen, and I am disappointed, declares Jessika Rosswall, European Commissioner of the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy. While the latest text on the table does not yet meet all our ambitions, it is a step forward -and the perfect must not be the enemy of the good. The EU will continue to push for a stronger, binding agreement."
