Solar PV: launch of a 1 GW power plant in Basra (Iraq) as part of the GGIP multi-energy project

1 GW: this will be the capacity of the solar power plant in Basra, Iraq, on which work began on 24/07/2025. Supported by TotalEnergies, which will operate and maintain the plant for 25 years, it will be built in four 250 MW units, with a total of two million solar panels covering 2,200 hectares. The first unit will be operational by the end of 2025.

The project also includes 132 kV transmission lines with a total length of 180 km, the construction of a new 132 kV substation and the rehabilitation and modernisation of two existing substations.

The solar power plant is part of the multi-energy GGIP (Gas Growth Integrated Project), led by a consortium comprising TotalEnergies (45%), Basrah Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%). It also includes the production of natural gas and the optimisation of oil production.
