EU industry energy consumption in 2023: -5.3% drop YOY, renewables account for 11.2% (Eurostat)

"The final energy consumption of the industry sector in the EU was 8990 PJ (petajoules) in 2023, down 5.3% compared with the 2022 level of 9489 PJ", observes Eurostat in an article on 25/07/2025.

The industry sector is one of the highest energy consumers in the EU, with 24.6% of energy consumption in 2023. However, Eurostat outlines a long-term decline in energy use since 1990, with a fall of almost a third in consumption, which is attributed to energy efficiency gains as well as structural changes in the EU’s economy.

Electricity (32.6%) and natural gas (31.3%) accounted together for nearly two-thirds of final energy consumption in the EU's industry sector in 2023, while renewables and biofuels accounted for 11.2%.
