Solar power: EU's leading source of electricity by June 2025 (SolarPower Europe report)

Solar power became the EU's leading source of electricity for the first time in June 2025, supplying 22.1% of the total electricity mix, according to SolarPower Europe's mid-2025 report, "EU Market Outlook for Solar Power", published on 24/07/2025,

At this rate, the EU will meet the REPowerEU target of installing 320 GW AC (or 400 GW DC) by the end of 2025. "What seemed difficult to imagine in the past has become reality at a record pace, proving that solar is the key player in the decarbonisation of the EU's electricity production", says SolarPower Europe.

However, the European association is observing a "moment of slowdown in the solar market". While the EU's target is to install 600 GW AC (750 GW DC) of solar power by 2030, the current pace of deployment would see 723 GW DC deployed. "This warning - first issued by SolarPower Europe with a yellow card to policymakers in 2024 - is now turning into a tangible gap."
