"The tech sector must lead the way in the energy transition. Artificial intelligence can make energy systems more efficient, more innovative and more resilient. And we must take advantage of this. But it is also extremely energy-intensive. A typical AI data centre gobbles up as much electricity as 100,000 homes", said Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, during a speech focusing on climate action in New York (USA) on 22/07/2025.

The UN has published a report entitled "Seizing the moment of opportunity - Supercharging the new energy era of renewables, efficiency, and electrification".

"This situation is unsustainable - and it is up to us to remedy it. Today, I am asking all the major technology companies to ensure that all their data centres run on renewable energy by 2030", says Antonio Guterres.
