"In 2023, environmental tax revenue in the EU amounted to € 341.5B compared with € 334.6B in 2022, marking a 2.1% increase (+ €6.9B), representing 2% of EU GDP (gross domestic product) and 5.1% of total EU government revenue from TSC (taxes and social contributions)", shows Eurostat on 22/07/2025.

Key figures of Eurostat's dataset are as follows:

• Environmental tax revenue amounted to € 341.5B in 2023 compared with € 334.6B in 2022;
• The share of environmental taxes in the EU’s GDP declined from 2.4% in 2010 to 2.0% in 2023;
• Environmental tax revenue as a share of the total government revenue from TSC fell from 6.3% in 2010 to 5.1% 2023, indicating that environmental taxes have become a smaller portion of the overall tax and social contribution revenue in the EU;
• Taxes on energy accounted for 76.4% of the total revenues from environmental taxes in 2023, transport represented 18.7% and pollution and resources 4.8%.
