Nuclear fusion: €202m invested by the EU in IFMIF-DONES project

The European Commission announced on 14/07/2025 that the EU will invest €202m in the IFMIF-DONES project. The investment is being made through Fusion for Energy (F4E).

The IFMIF-DONES programme involves the creation of a materials testing centre designed to test the resistance of materials under the conditions of a fusion reactor, with the aim of validating their operation under the extreme conditions induced by fusion. The facilities include a particle accelerator that will generate a neutron flux similar to that of a fusion reactor.

This represents around 25% of the total cost of the project. It is located in the Granada region of Spain.

IFMIF-DONES is a project involving a strategic technology in the energy sector, and the European Union has reaffirmed its support," says Marc Lachaise, Director of Fusion for Energy.
