Agricultural outlook: +13% consumption by 2034, +14% production (OECD/FAO)

World consumption of agricultural, fisheries and aquaculture products is set to increase by 13%, at constant prices, between now and 2034, according to the OECD/FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025-2034, published on 15/07/2025. To satisfy rapidly expanding demand, world production is set to increase by 14% at constant prices.

Most of the demand increase is expected to come from low- and middle-income countries, where it will be driven by a growing population. However, while half of the growth in consumption in middle-income countries can be attributed to rising per capita incomes, three-quarters of the growth in consumption in low-income countries is due to demographics.

To meet rapidly expanding demand, production will increase, with middle-income countries being the main drivers of global agricultural growth. These changes in the structure of production will be driven by the gradual adoption of innovative or improved technologies, capital investment and more intensive use of fertilisers, animal feed and other inputs in middle-income countries.
