COP30, 2040 EU climate targets, UN plastic treaty: key topics of the Aalborg Envi meeting (Council)

An informal ministerial meeting took place in Aalborg (Denmark) on 10 and 11/07/2025, with EU Ministers for the Environment, and Jessika Roswall and Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioners for Environment and Climate, hosted by Magnus Heunike, Lars Aagaard, and Jeppe Bruus, Danish Ministers for Environment, Climate and Energy, and Green Transition.

Key topics of the meeting included the EU position for the COP30 in Bélem (Brazil) in November 2025, the EU climate policy beyond 2030, the 2040 climate targets presented by the Commission on 02/07/2025 and the UN plastic treaty's negotiation that will take place in Geneva (Switzerland) from 5 to 14/08/2025.

The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) will hold an additional intergovernmental negotiating committee session to try to reach an agreement on a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution, after countries failed to do so in December 2024 in Busan (South Korea).
