Call for carbon footprint integration in EU climate accountability instead of GHG emissions (UNIDEN)

In a press release published on 10 July 2025, Uniden (French Union des Industries Utilisatrices d'Energies / Union of Energy-using Industries) expressed the hope that the scope of European climate policy would be the carbon footprint, rather than just domestic emissions. 'Focusing on the GHG emissions indicator obscures the carbon weight of imports, and CBAM will not change this reality', the organisation declared.

Uniden is reacting to the publication of the European Commission's revised climate strategy for achieving climate neutrality in the EU by 2050 on 02/07/2025. In particular, the EU is aiming for a 90% reduction in net GHG emissions by 2040, including carbon credits originated outside the EU in the calculation and adding certain flexibility measures.
