United Kingdom: national strategy to "reverse 10 years of stagnation" for onshore wind energy

"Reversing near decade of stagnation in the UK onshore wind industry" is the aim of the National Onshore Wind Strategy published by the UK Government on 04/07/2025.

The plan, which focuses in particular on England, comprises 42 measures, including :
• Unlocking up to 10 GW of capacity by resolving issues of coexistence between onshore wind and civil and defence aviation infrastructure;
• Repowering old turbines across the country to maintain the existing fleet and ensure continued clean, local electricity generation;
• Providing local authorities and developers with the tools they need to deliver the first UK projects since the moratorium was lifted in 2024, including updating the information used in planning decisions and optimising site surveys and assessments to speed up procedures;
• Investigating the extension of the Clean Industry Bonus to incentivise developers to invest in domestic supply chains, particularly in industrial regions, or in more sustainable supply chains.
