EP / Envi Committee: consensus to speed up the marketing of biological control agents

A clear and harmonised definition of BCAs (biological control agents) and a clear and flexible legal framework; simplified and accelerated marketing authorisation procedures; and additional funding for EFSA: these are the main demands of the ENVI and AGRI committees, meeting in the European Parliament on 03/07/2025, concerning biological control agents.
An initial report was presented by Alexandre Bernhuber and Anna Strolenberg, EPP and Green MEPs, on 12/06/2025. The groups communicated their positions during the ordinary session, in anticipation of the European Commission proposing an omnibus text in the autumn.

In their presentation of the report, the co-rapporteurs emphasised:

• The importance of a clear distinction between chemical and biological plant protection products
• The acceleration of authorisation procedures for the marketing of BCAs
• The importance of facilitating access to BCAs to reduce the use of conventional plant protection products
• The need for a support framework for companies
