"The stakes are very high. Every tonne of CO₂ emitted today compromises our future. This is why Parliament is ready to play its part, in a constructive spirit and with a sense of responsibility. I appeal to all political groups and Member States to move quickly to reach an ambitious agreement on the 2040 target", says Antonio Decaro, Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety and S&D MEP about the updated 2040 climate target proposed by the Commission on 02/07/2025.

On 02/07/2025, the European Commission proposed an updated version of the European Climate Law, adding some flexibility measures to its reduction target of 90% GHG emissions by 2040.
