Renewable energy: +3.4% supply in the EU in 2024, non-renewables decreasing (Eurostat)

"In 2024, the supply of renewable energy in the EU increased by 3.4% compared with 2023, amounting to around 11.3 million terajoules (TJ) in 2024", describes Eurostat on 02/07/2025. Most non-renewable energy supplies decreased at the same time, with variations within products. Coal supplies are the ones that decreased the most between 2023 and 2024, especially hard coal, which decreased from 13.8% in one year.

Results of Eurostat show that renewable energy is the leading source of electricity in the EU in 2024. "Data for electricity shows a record high reliance on renewables and a record low use of fossil fuels. In 2024, 47.3% of electricity in the EU was produced from renewable energy (44.9% in 2023), and 29.2% from fossil fuels (32.2% in 2023). The remaining portion (23.4%) is nuclear power, having continued its recovery, which started in 2023 after the record-low levels registered in 2022", announces Eurostat.

In the 1990-2024 time period, the first time renewable energy exceeded fossil fuels' electricity production was in 2020. It already exceeded nuclear power since 2013.
