EP / EU 2040 climate target: "We don’t see a majority without flexibility" (P. Liese & C. Ehler, EPP)

"We don’t see a majority in Parliament nor Council for any 2040 target without flexibility. Even more important is that finally Europe will create the enabling conditions to reach any 2040 target, for example for the ramp up of hydrogen, CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and cheap electricity", declare Peter Liese and Christian Ehler, MEPs (EPP, Germany) and spokespersons of the ENVI (Environment, Climate and Food Safety) and ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy) Committees, in a joint statement published on 01/07/2025.

The EU 2040 climate target will be presented by the Commission on 02/07/2025. Key announcements will concern the percentage of reduction of GHG by 2040 as an intermediate target for climate neutrality in 2050, carbon credits transfer under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and inclusion of flexibility measures.
