Heatwave / France : possible reductions in nuclear power generation from 27/06/2025

EDF announced on 26/06/2025 that production restrictions are likely to affect the French nuclear fleet, and more specifically the Bugey site (Ain), from 27/06/2025. These production adjustments are being made because of the forecast high temperatures on the Rhône.

In order to cool their facilities, nuclear power plants draw water from the sea or from rivers. This water is then released in liquid or gaseous form, warmer than it was withdrawn. During a prolonged period of drought or heatwave, river levels are generally lower and their temperature higher.

The Bugey nuclear power plant counts four 900 MW pressurised water reactors. In 2024, it produced 18.5 TWh of electricity. The site was chosen for a pair of EPR2 reactors at the Nuclear Policy Council meeting on 19/07/2023.
