Nikolaus Kriz appointed Executive Director of EFSA

Nikolaus Kriz has been appointed Executive Director of EFSA (the European Food Safety Agency), succeeding Bernhard Url, who held the post for eleven years. Nikolaus Kriz will take up his post in September 2025 for a five-year term, the agency announced on 25/06/2025. Dr Nikolaus Kriz (an Austrian national), a veterinary surgeon and researcher, joined EFSA in 2017 as Head of the Animal Health and Welfare and Plant Health Unit. He is currently head of the risk assessment services department (ENABLE). In particular, he has been involved in EFSA's support for the new animal welfare legislation being developed by the European Commission as part of its Farm to Fork strategy. Previously, from 2001 to 2016, he held various management positions at the European Medicines Agency (London).
