'Biodiversity is a complex matter. Depending on the area concerned, some practices would favour certain species and harm others. Creating a rating system that reflects biodiversity as a whole is an extremely difficult exercise in itself. The aim is to produce something meaningful that provides information on the major well-known trends. While a consensus has been reached on favourable practices, such as reducing pesticides and ploughing, and the presence of hedges and meadows, there is not necessarily a consensus on the extent of potential benefits, which may depend on specific parameters (e.g. the type of tree species in the hedge). Therefore, it will be difficult to reach a complete consensus on the scoring method. Moreover, no single indicator has achieved complete consensus in international bodies. "There's a notion of compromise and choice", said Vincent Colomb, Ademe's environmental labelling coordinator, in an interview with News Tank on 23 June 2025.
