Green Claims directive: Commission withdrawal expected if microenterprises not excluded

The European Commission has confirmed on 23/06/2025 through a spokesperson that it intended to withdraw the Green Claims Directive if an amendment applying to microenterprises was not pulled out. "When it came to discussions with co-legislators on the Green Claims Directive, there have been developments including an amendment which clearly goes against this very objective of the Commission : the simplification agenda, in particular in regard to microenterprises. Which means 30 million microenterprises, 96% of all companies, would be covered by the proposal if microenterprises were included." On Friday, a spokesperson for the Commission had already said "that the proposal would be withdrawn in the current context".

The Green Claims Directive aims to prevent companies from making unverified statements about their carbon footprint such as "good for the environment" or "responsible product".
