GHG emissions in France: 369 Mt CO2eq in 2024, -1,8% compared to 2023 (Citepa)

France’s GHG emissions in 2024 are estimated at 369 Mt CO₂eq, down 1.8% from 2023 (376 Mt CO₂eq), or −6.9 Mt CO₂eq (excluding carbon sinks), according to the French NGO Citepa. The organisation updated its estimate of greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants as part of the release of the 2025 edition of the Secten report, published on 16/06/2025.

All major sectors are contributing to this decline:
−3.8 Mt for the energy industry
−0.9 Mt for the manufacturing industry
−1.5 Mt for transport
−0.4 Mt for buildings
−0.4 Mt for agriculture

"The fall in emissions is driven by the energy industry, whose emissions are down by 10.2% in 2024 compared with 2023. The use of fossil-fired electricity generation in 2024 declined by −11.8 TWh (−40.4%), mainly due to the continued recovery of nuclear generation (+41.3 TWh compared with 2023, +12.9%) and strong hydro generation (+16.2 TWh compared with 2023, +27.5%). GHG emissions from electricity generation in 2024 are down by −3.5 Mt CO₂eq (−25.2%)compared with 2023, " details the Citepa report.
