France : "Make the national food strategy a driver for transition" (letter to the Government)

Introducing environmental labelling, devising public campaigns to raise awareness on sustainable food, laying common ground rules to encourage all distributors to commit to progress: these are the demands made by the five major French retail distributors (Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, Groupement Mousquetaires and Coopérative U) in a letter sent to the government on 12/06/2025.

They express their pleas and concerns in the context of the upcoming announcement of the Snanc (National strategy for food, nutrition and climate), that defines the government's policy for healthy and sustainable food for all by 2030.

"We call on the public authorities to make the National food strategy a driving force for the food transition of consumers, and for the ecological transition of the agri-food sector, drawing inspiration from public policies pursued elsewhere in Europe", they declare.

Their demands include:

• A harmonised environmental labelling to promote sustainable products with a dedicated transparent framework
