€1 Bn investment for the first European Ocean Pact announced by Ursula von der Leyen at Nice's UNOC

"Europe is investing €1 B in 50 projects around the world. €1 B in projects for those who make a living from the sea. We will invest in scientists and conservationists who seek to protect it", announces Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission in Nice on 09/06/2025 at the UNOC (United Nations Ocean Conference) co-organised by France and Costa Rica.

This announcement is part of the first European Ocean Pact, adopted on 05/06/025 in Brussels and presented by Ursula von der Leyen. In addition, the EU launches a Global Ocean Programme to implement the BBNJ (Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction), announced by Costas Kadis, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans.

Priorities of the European Ocean Pact include:

• Protecting and restoring the ocean's health and resources through protected areas
• Boosting the competitiveness of the EU blue economy with an industrial strategy
