Glyphosate: EU to reassess dangerosity after new cancer risk study

The European Commission announces, on 13/06/2025, it will re-examine glyphosate’s safety following a new study suggesting increased cancer risk from chronic exposure. The study in question was published in the specialized scientific newspaper Environmental on 10/06/2025. The study, based on the larger animal testing ever carried on, showed "significant dose-related increased trends or increased incidences of benign and malignant tumors" to the animals, no matter the dose of glyphosate injected.

EU agencies EFSA (European Chemicals Agency) and ECHA (European Food Safety Authority) have been tasked with evaluating the findings alongside existing data. "If needed, we will adjust or withdraw the authorization for glyphosate," said a Commission spokesperson to Table.media.

The Commission underlined that ECHA and the EFSA had "carefully reviewed all available information" on glyphosate’s potential cancer risk. It also noted that the study’s authors have not yet shared raw data, which is required for formal assessment.
